How many fire extinguishers do you need?

How many fire extinguishers do you need?

So how many fire extinguishers do you need in a workplace. This a common question to our office and also on our fire extinguisher training courses. This guide will help you decide if you have enough fire extinguishers.

A workplace should have one general purpose extinguisher for every 200 square metres of floor space. This is usually water but can also be a foam extinguisher. In addition to general purpose extinguishers, a workplace will need extinguishers for other risks. For example; CO2 for electrical hazards, wet chemical for cooking oils and also dry powder for risks involving gas (but not usually indoors).

Here are a few other rules to help:

  • One general purpose (gp) extinguisher for every 200 square metres of floor space
  • If a workplace has less than 100 square metres of floor only one gp is needed.
  • A minimum of two gp extinguishers per floor. If a workplace has a floor of 300 square metres then two gp extinguishers are needed.
  • No-one should have to walk for more than 30 metres to get to an extinguisher
  • Extinguishers must be maintained by a competent person once per year.
  • Extinguishers must also be be checked at least once per month. Check that the pin and tag are in place, the gauge needle is in the green section (where fitted) and also that the extinguishers are not covered or obstructed.
  • Lastly, remember that all persons in a workplace need fire extinguisher training…. so why not give us a call to carry out your training!
